Trains across the nation transform into magical trains rides during the holidays. This idea became very popular after the release of The Polar Express in November of 2004. Families from all over can experience the North Pole and spread the Christmas cheer around. Check out these holiday themed train rides and don’t forget to see if there are any train rides like this around your area. It is a great way to spend the holidays with the whole family!
Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad/West Virginia Central Railroad in West Virginia
The official Polar Express takes places every year throughout November and December at the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad in West Virginia. The train picks up excited guests at the depot in western Maryland and takes them on an hour-long trip to the beautiful and snowy North Pole. The weather is usually chilly with snow so it is great for the ride to help get passengers in the spirit. Many passengers come in their pajamas and eat goodies and drink hot cocoa while on the train. Guests can enjoy music from the movie and watch the dancing chefs as they wait on the guests. Each child receives a silver sleigh bell to take home along with a souvenir mug.
Huckleberry Railroad in Michigan
The Huckleberry Railroad in Michigan really celebrates the holiday season with villagers dressed in costumes and homes and shops decorated in holiday cheer. The Colwell Opera House near by also offers great entertainment and a spot where children can see Santa Claus. The village is covered in sparkling lights and always playing holiday music. The railroad offers a nighttime train ride to get a great view of all of the holiday festivities.
Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad in Washington
In Washington, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad may not have the official Polar Express, but the Santa Express is just as great of a time for residents and visitors of the area. The steam train takes guests through the woodlands of Mount Rainier, where it can get very cold, but the ride is well worth it. Tickets always seem to sell out quickly, so make sure to make reservations right away. The train offers guests a breathtaking view of the area while they can drink cocoa and eat delicious cookies as they head to the North Pole. The Santa Express starts on November 28th this year and will be open until December 21st.
