There is not that many movies out there that tell the story of famous musicians. But from the few music biopics that have been made, there are some that go down in history as legendary films.

The movie about the life of Ray Charles took the director 15 years to make. Jamie Foxx stars as Ray and his epic performance earned him an Academy Award. The movie is compelling and pulls at viewer’s heartstrings. Unfortunately, Ray Charles died just months before the premiere of the box office hit. The movie Ray went on to gross over 1$20 million dollars.

Straight Outta Compton

Straight Outta Compton is the newest music biopic to hit theaters. The film takes viewers on the journey of how Dr. Dre, Easy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren and DJ Yella formed the group N.W.A. and took the music world by storm. Two members of N.W.A, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube helped executive produce the film that critics have gone on to rave about. Straight Outta Compton started development back in 2009, but due to casting delays, it caused the movie to be pushed back. The movie started filming in August of 2014 and was released a year later.

Walk the Line

Johnny Cash is one of the best musicians in the history of music. Walk the Line is a film that focuses on the early years of Cash. Joaquin Phoenix nails the role as Johnny Cash and so does Reese Witherspoon as June Carter-Cash. The film is amazing and tells the story of Cash’s drug addiction and many other issues he faced early on in his career. It is incredible to see that Cash rose from all of his struggles to become a successful and legendary artist.

The film tells the story of rock and roll great Jerry Lee Lewis. Great Balls of Fire really captures the talent of Lewis and Dennis Quaid did an incredible job playing the astonishing piano player. It is said that Lewis didn’t like the movie, but did approve of Quaid’s performance.
